Autism & ADHD

Does your mind work differently than others?

Do You…
  • struggle with sensory aversions?
  • constantly feel overwhelmed or distracted?
  • feel like life is just harder for you than for others?
  • struggle to make and maintain friendships?
  • find it hard to meet other people’s expectations?
  • have difficulty identifying and talking about your emotions?
  • experience uncontrollable emotional outbursts or shutdowns?
  • have low frustration tolerance and give up easily?

“The problem with pounding a square peg into a round hole is not that the hammering is hard work. It’s that you’re destroying the peg.”

Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy

Life can be confusing and challenging for those with autism and/or ADHD. Day-to-day functioning can feel exhausting, and it might seem impossible to pinpoint why. The reason for this is often an overwhelmed nervous system. Meltdowns and shutdowns are our body’s way of telling us that we’ve pushed too far and need a break. In this state maintaining focus, staying organized, and feeling in control of our emotions just isn’t feasible. Additionally, those who are neurodivergent frequently feel chronically misunderstood and alone, struggling to connect with others, as well as broader neurotypical society and beliefs.

As in life, those who are neurodivergent have unique needs in mental health treatment. With extensive education and training, as well as lived experiences, our therapists are experts at understanding the presenting issues for high-functioning autism and inattentive type ADHD, especially for those who are late-diagnosed or AFAB. Unlike other therapists we aren’t here to encourage masking in order to fit neurotypical beliefs about what makes a meaningful or successful life. With a focus on values-focused living we can help you sift through everything you’ve been told to figure out what really matters to you. We’ll work on identifying your strengths in order to build a life that maximizes on them. We’ll also identify triggers that lead to meltdowns and burnout in order to make changes to your environment and reduce the impact sensory and emotional triggers have on your nervous system. Rather than telling you to simply cut activities out of your life, our priority is to help you create safe spaces and routines that provide enough time to unwind following stressors so you can do more of what you love. Our therapists are well versed in a variety of strategies to build and reinforce executive functioning skills like emotion regulation, time management, and task paralysis. Self-acceptance is a large part of the work we do. The intention is not to merely have you accept your limitations but rather fully understand your needs and take action to meet them on a regular basis. And when our needs are met, our nervous system calms, and life gets easier.
