Non-Traditional Relationships

You shouldn’t have to educate your therapist about your identity. Spotted Rabbit’s LGBTQIA+ specialists have personal and professional experience, as well as extensive training, not only helping folks explore their gender, but also their sexuality and the wide variety of relationship structures that exist, including polyamory, ethical non-monogamy, and platonic life partnership, to name just a few. Our focus on living authentically also means we support you in having and maintaining relationships that align with your needs and values. The line between friendships and romantic relationships is blurry at best and we are here for all the ways that people connect and care for one another.

While we don’t currently offer couples counseling, our therapists are here to help you navigate your own sexual and relationship exploration. Additionally, we focus on empowering our clients with skills in assertive communication so that they may strengthen their connections by communicating often, openly, and with intention. We find that many clients come to us to explore their own feelings when their partner initiates an opening up of the relationship, to evaluate the effectiveness of specific relationships, and to seek support in having difficult, but needed, conversations with those they love. We can also help if your partner(s) is undergoing gender transition or if you are looking for a kink/BDSM friendly provider.

Many therapists who specialize in alternative relationships seem to ignore the unique situations that individuals who identify as asexual, aromantic, demisexual and/or demiromantic find themselves. Many feel isolated and out of place, or even that there is something wrong with them. We can offer community and solidarity around developing strong non-sexual relationships, as well as help you navigate life with a partner(s) that has different romantic and sexual needs than you do. Additionally, our deep understanding of neurodivergent needs and communication styles means we are especially well equipped to help you navigate how autism and ADHD may impact your relationship(s).

And even if you feel secure in your sexuality and relationships, our therapists also know that things like anxiety, depression, neurodivergence, and trauma can influence and be influenced by our relationships. It’s difficult to address any mental health issue in isolation so having a therapist who understands all parts of your life is important if you’re to truly live authentically.
