What Kinds Of Art And Music Classes Are Offered?

At Spotted Rabbit Studio teaching artists offer visual art classes in just about every medium, as well as music making and the performing arts. We are skilled in traditional and non-traditional art making techniques including blends of visual, musical and performing arts. Our goal is to provide a supportive mentoring relationship so that you can bring your creative vision to life regardless of your previous art-making experience.

We use only professional grade materials, tools, and instruments in our studio. Please see below for a partial list of our teaching specialties. If you don’t see the medium you’re looking for please contact us. Chances are we offer it.

WOOD WORKING – After reviewing safety protocols you’ll gain access to fundamental tools – hand saws, drills, screwdrivers, hammers, electric sanders, and more (depending on ability). With adjustable height work benches and plenty of raw materials you can make just about anything you can imagine in our wood shop!

CERAMICS – We specialize in hand building with access to low- and high-fire clay, a variety of glazes, and a huge assortment of both formal ceramic tools and found objects for use in our dedicated ceramic space. With a kiln onsite and weekly firings you’ll spend less time waiting and more time creating.

ELECTRONIC ARTS – Explore the use of electronics in art making through circuit bending, electronic music, and introductory computer programming and robotics. Explore how tinkering with old electronic toys and computers can provide you with the inspiration and parts to create something new visually and/or musically.

PUPPETRY & IMPROV – Upgrade your sock puppets with a little inspiration from the muppets! We’ve got all the parts, if you have the imagination. Plus, once you’ve created your puppets, improv and puppet artist Keith Handy will help you bring your creation to life with expressive hand movements and voice.

MUSIC MAKING – Learn to play an instrument, explore improvisation, practice relaxation and meditation techniques, and engage in musical self-expression – all in a safe and open environment. Explore guitar, ukulele, piano, drums and other percussion instruments or experiment with music composition and recording.

PAINTING, DRAWING & PRINTS – Explore modern and traditional drawing, painting and printmaking techniques with a wide selection of artist-grade materials. Learn when and how to use colored pencils, markers, watercolor, watercolor pencils, pastels, acrylic, printing ink, and mixed media to make your compositions pop!

FIBER ARTS –
More than knitting and weaving, the term “fiber arts” refers to all things soft and plush. This includes hand sewing, machine sewing, various forms of weaving (table loom, circle knitters, hand-held looms), crochet, embroidery, cross-stitch, needlepoint, and felting, among others.

How Are Classes Scheduled?

Due to the personalized nature of our classes we ask that individuals complete a registration process that involves touring the studio, talking about your specific goals, and meeting potential teaching artists before we schedule classes. Registration is on-going throughout the year.

Once the registration process is complete we will work with you to develop a class schedule that meets your needs. Classes are typically scheduled in one-hour blocks, however shorter and longer classes can be accommodated. Many individuals attend classes weekly, however some attend multiple times per week, and others once a month. Each teaching artist has different availability but overall classes are scheduled 9am-7pm Monday-Friday and 9am-12pm Saturday.

Most classes are located at our main studio at 115 Metro Park, Rochester, NY 14623.
Wood working classes are held at our wood shop located at 936 Exchange Street, Rochester, NY 14608.

Are There Any Group Classes?

At this time Spotted Rabbit Studio is focused on individual class programming. However, we continually survey class participants on their interests, skill level, and desire to engage in small-group experiences and propose such opportunities when there is a match.

Who Can Register For Classes?

Spotted Rabbit Studio offers individual visual, musical, and performing arts classes for youth (K-12) and adults of all abilities.

We believe all individuals deserve the opportunity to explore their personal interests within an environment flexible enough to accommodate their specific learning needs. Our teaching artists are skilled at adapting classes to meet the learning styles of all students, whether it’s physical modification to tools and processes that are required, or emotional sensitivity to a different way of viewing the world. Our personalized approach to teaching enables us to match you with a teaching artist that is the best fit for your interests, skills, and personality.

Can I Stay At The Studio During My Child’s Class?

To encourage individuals to let loose and fully engage in the creative process we generally ask that family, friends, and other support staff relax in our waiting area during classes. Our comfy couches are perfect for reading or catching up on emails and when the weather cooperates there is also a picnic bench outside. Parents are also welcome to drop off their children and leave the premises to run errands if needed.

Spotted Rabbit Studio can also accommodate individuals who choose to have support staff with them during classes and/or require the presence of support staff due to medical issues or behavioral concerns. Please let us know when registering if there are any special needs we can assist with.

Is The Studio Wheelchair Accessible?

Yes, Spotted Rabbit Studio is wheelchair accessible! An attached parking lot easily accommodates loading and unloading, with an entrance only feet from the parking lot. While our primary studio is located on the ground floor and provides wheelchair accessibility the space is not fully ADA compliant (bathroom can accommodate most manual wheelchairs). We are currently saving funds to purchase and outfit a studio mid-2018 so as to offer a truly accessible art and music making space!

Our secondary studio at The Refinery currently houses our wood shop and will be wheelchair accessible once the exterior ramp near our entrance is added.

Our space is entirely LATEX FREE and we are happy to accommodate any other allergies or special needs. Please just let us know!

Registration Process

Unlike traditional art studios we offer 100% personalized individual classes. That is, we invite you to take a tour of the studio and meet with the director so we can learn about you and your creative goals. Then, if you haven’t already met them, we’ll set up a meet and greet with a teaching artist we feel would be a good fit for your ability, personality, and artistic goals. From there you’ll schedule classes based on the availability of yourself, the teaching artist and our art making space!

Contact Spotted Rabbit Studio to let us know what you’re interested in and to set up a tour!
